Jenner, A Milkmaid And A Vaccine
18th Century Doctor Edward Jenner, once heard a Milkmaid Bragging that she would never catch smallpox, he wasn't the first to realize that there could be a possible link between getting cowpox and it protecting against smallpox, and he wasn't the first to experiment, but was the first to document his findings. So what Jenner dose is takes a son of his gardener, James Phipps injects him with cowpox describing his condition on his 7th day after being injected with cowpox "he complained of uneasiness in the axilla and on the ninth he became a little chilly, lost his appetite, and had a slight headache. During the whole of this day he was perceptibly indisposed, and spent the night with some degree of restlessness, but on the day following he was perfectly well" Then he proceeds to cut three slashes into James Phipps' arm and rub the pus from a smallpox victim into them, knowing fully that if this didn't work he would probably go blind and potentially die in pain and agony, fortunately the milkmaid hadn't lied and James Phipps lived a long and happy life and in recognition to his contribution Jenner gifted him a cottage (Now the Edward Jenner Museum)
